Even though
Chicxulub is
a town of just a few thousand people, there are currently 70 primary and
secondary age students ( with a waiting list of approximately 25
children) involved in after school Proyecto Itzaes classes at any given
time. The classes are taught by the graduates of the program in earlier
years. These student teachers are older teenagers and university
students who donate their time to the community to continue the program
and to pass on what they have learned. It is their successful
implementation of team teaching and community involvement that led to
the motto of Proyecto Itzaes. Kaambal u tia’al
Ka’ansaj— Aprender para Enseñar Maya and Spanish respectively
for “Learning in Order to Teach.”
Proyecto Itzaes is a California
non-profit organization which has been
sponsored in part by the Center for the Expansion of Language and
Thinking (CELT) and Rotary International.
